No chicken feeder is rat proof on its own, and the makers say so. A rat-proof chicken feeder is a closed feeder that opens only under a hen’s weight, which makes feed harder for rats to reach but does not make it impossible. I would build the fix in three parts: a feeder whose lid or ports shut when no hen is on it, feed pulled or closed at dusk, and a coop rats cannot enter. This page compares four rodent-resistant feeders on the number that matters, the weight that opens them, then covers the other two parts.
Quick picks
Pick by flock size and by whether the maker publishes a trigger weight. Weights come from the makers’ pages, and “not stated” means the page leaves the number out. Prices were checked 2026-10-09.

How I chose these feeders
I ranked these on three things that are public: whether the maker states an activation weight, whether the maker admits the limits of its design, and what owners report. I have not run a controlled comparison of any of them. Every rodent claim below belongs to the maker, and none of the pages cites independent data. I left out feeders with no stated mechanism and plain hanging feeders, which have no lid to close.
Does the trigger weight beat a rat?
On paper, only the Grandpa’s Large clears every adult rat. UC IPM lists adult roof rats at 5 to 10 ounces and adult Norway rats at 7 to 18 ounces. Grandpa’s Standard lists an approximate activation weight of 14 oz (500 g), which sits inside the Norway range, and its page does not reconcile the two units: 500 g converts to about 17.6 oz. Either way, a big adult Norway rat is near the line. The Large lists about 2 lb (900 g), which is 32 oz and above the top of both ranges.
Weight is not the whole answer. Dine-A-Chook, which sells a competing feeder, claims rats learn to open treadle feeders, sometimes by standing on the platform together (Dine-A-Chook). It cites no study for this, so read it as a competitor’s view. The practical rule is to pick a trigger weight above the rats you have and below your lightest hen. A feeder that your lightest hen cannot open leaves her hungry.
Best treadle feeder for rats
Grandpa’s Feeder is the best rat-resistant treadle feeder because it is the only one in this group that publishes activation weights for both sizes and states its limits. The maker says the covered design helps make feed harder for rats, mice and wild birds to reach, then adds that it is not a guarantee. That honesty is worth something when other pages say 100 percent.

Best for a small flock or a tight budget
The Roamwild PestOff is the cheapest rodent-resistant feeder here at $49.99 and the easiest to set up, because each of its two ports sits on a spring that opens under a hen’s weight and the maker says no training is needed. It holds 8 lb, so it fits two to four hens and not a big flock. The maker calls it 100 percent pest-proof by design and cites no independent testing.

Alternatives for bigger flocks
The RentACoop treadle and the Rat Proof Chicken Feeder Medium suit larger flocks, but neither states a trigger weight, so you are trusting the maker’s claim without a number to check. RentACoop says its treadle feeder helps block rats, mice, squirrels and wild birds and feeds about six adult hens for up to ten days. ratproofchickenfeeder.net says its feeders stop rats, mice and wild birds, that some users report they defeat squirrels, and that many customers report a 50 percent saving in feed. Those are vendor statements, not measurements.

What owners report
Reviewers on the RentACoop listing report lid latch failures, water getting in and hard assembly, including one who ground down stops in the step arms. One says a bantam Cochin could not open the treadle once it hung lower. One describes a serious accident with birds trapped at the side of the feeder, so read that review before you buy.

- The 50 percent feed saving is the vendor's claim
Build your own
A DIY treadle feeder works on the same idea and can cost little. The GRIT build is a box with a hinged trough lid and a treadle platform, and its author says the lumber cost under $20. Its author reports it keeps out songbirds, mice and other rodents, and that claim rests on personal experience and not on testing. Hens that eat from the side of the box are a hazard, the article warns, because the lid can swing into their heads when the feeding hen steps off.
Grubbly Farms shows a different route, a lidded 2.5 or 5 gallon bucket on a shepherd’s hook (Grubbly Farms). It encloses feed but is not designed as a rodent barrier, the article gives no rat data, and the author pairs it with barn cats. I would call it a waste-saver, not a rat solution.
Why a feeder alone will not stop rats
A feeder is one layer. Rats eat what is abundant, and Norway rats favor cereal grains (UC IPM), which describes most poultry feed. Four habits do the rest.
- Close or pull the feeder at dusk. A laying hen eats about 0.25 lb a day (University of Kentucky), so a full feeder left open overnight feeds rodents far more than hens. A feeder with a lid that shuts when no hen is on it does this for you.
- Store feed in a lidded metal can. Rats can gnaw their way in (UC IPM), so a paper bag in the corner is open storage. Keepers in a Facebook poultry group recommend metal bins for the same reason.
- Clean up spills. Feed under the feeder is a free meal, and no lid fixes that.
- Seal the coop. UC IPM says rats, especially young ones, can squeeze under a door with a 1/2 inch gap, and it recommends sealing holes larger than 1/4 inch. Walk the floor edges, vents and door gaps. The hardware cloth guide covers mesh, and the predator-proof coop guide covers the rest of the build.
If your trouble is waste and not rats, a hooded port feeder from the best chicken feeders list costs less and does that job.
Training hens to use it
Plan on about two weeks for a treadle feeder. Grandpa’s Feeder uses two stages: secure the lid in its first open position for about a week so the flock eats comfortably, then move to the next position for about another week so birds get used to the treadle and lid movement. It tells you to extend a stage when timid or low-ranking birds need more time. ratproofchickenfeeder.net says its soft-close door made training harder, so it trained flocks when the birds were hungry and motivated. The treadle feeder guide has the full step-by-step and the bantam notes. Roamwild’s spring-loaded ports skip the process, per the maker.
The full range of feeder guides is in the chicken feeder hub.
Questions people ask
Do treadle feeders keep rats out?
They keep them out better than an open trough, but no maker promises a perfect result. Grandpa's Feeder says on its own page that its feeder is not a universal rat-proof, wildlife-proof or weatherproof guarantee. The question is whether the activation weight sits above the rat. Grandpa's Large opens at about 2 lb, above the 7 to 18 oz of an adult Norway rat (UC IPM), and its Standard opens at about 14 oz, which is inside that range.
Can squirrels open treadle feeders?
Possibly. RentACoop says its treadle feeder helps block squirrels and ratproofchickenfeeder.net says some users report it defeats them, but none of the makers publishes a squirrel weight or squirrel data. Keepers ask this often, for example in r/BackYardChickens. If squirrels visit, ask the maker for the activation weight and watch the feeder for a week before you rely on it.
How do I stop rats eating chicken feed?
Use four layers: a closed feeder, feed pulled or closed at dusk, feed stored in a lidded metal can, and a coop with no gaps. UC IPM says to seal holes larger than 1/4 inch, and young rats can squeeze under a door with a 1/2 inch gap. The predator-proof coop guide and the hardware cloth guide cover the building side.
How much does a rat weigh compared with a treadle trigger?
Adult roof rats weigh 5 to 10 ounces and adult Norway rats 7 to 18 ounces (UC IPM). Grandpa's Feeder lists approximate activation weights of 14 oz (500 g) for the Standard and 2 lb (900 g) for the Large. Roamwild, RentACoop and ratproofchickenfeeder.net do not state a trigger weight, so ask before you buy.
