Kyle, backyard chicken keeper

Five years of keeping hens on a small farm, and the author of every FlockProof guide.

Kyle has kept backyard chickens on his own small farm for five years. He is the named author of every page on FlockProof, and he gives his pick first on each one. The rooster in the trucker cap and flannel is his cartoon alter ego, and it marks the spots where a page gives his opinion.

What Kyle covers

FlockProof covers the gear a backyard flock depends on, one hub at a time:

  • Automatic chicken coop doors: which doors to buy, why they fail and what to check before you trust one.
  • Winter: heat, insulation and ventilation, with running costs worked out.
  • Waterers: heated, nipple and automatic waterers, and how to keep water from freezing.
  • Feeders: feeders that cut waste, keep feed dry and keep rats out.
  • Predators: hardware cloth, dig barriers, roofs and latches.
  • Chicks: brooders, heat plates and the temperature chart.
  • Coops: kits, portable coops and walk-in coops sized for real flocks.
  • Runs: size, wire, roof and the ground underfoot.
  • Coop gear: nesting boxes and what goes inside the coop.

How Kyle writes

Kyle gives opinions as a keeper, such as which door he would trust or which heater he would skip. The numbers behind those opinions come from extension services, manufacturer specs, dated prices and linked owner reports, and each one links to its source. His own flock data, when he has logged it, appears in a box labeled “From Kyle’s flock” with a date. Health and safety figures come from extension services and veterinary references, and health pages carry a “Not vet advice” box. The whole method is on how FlockProof researches gear.
